Subject: Re: restraint reduction policy

Have you taken a look at the "Physical restraints" section under "Clinical Resources" for nursing homes on the MedQIC website at http://www.medqic.org or http://www.medqic.org/content/nationalpriorities/nursinghome/nhTopics.jsp?topicID=413&nhID=1028717

MedQIC was created by CMS and the QIOs to provide quality improvement resources and there is a bunch of information re: ADL decline, delirium,
infections, pain, physical restraints, pressure ulcers, and walking improvement, as well as a new manual on developing policies for the administration of both influenza and pneumococcal vaccines, and directions on implementing a quality improvement process.

Just glancing at the physical restraints section, two sections that may be of interest are (FYI, Download buttons probably don't work via this e-mail.Go to web site to access):

Title:  Flow Diagrams Related to Physical Restraints
Description:  These flow diagrams outline the processes of care related to decreasing physical restraint use. Use them to help your facility pinpoint components that may be missing from your current processes, or as a teaching aide for your staff.

  • Development of Physical Restraint Plan of Care   (MS Word, 43008 k)   Download
  • Overview of Training & Education for Physical Restraints   (MS Word, 27648 k)   Download

Title:  Facility-assessment Checklists (Physical Restraints)
Description:  These checklists are to be used by nursing home staff to identify areas to improve within the existing processes of care in a facility. Checklists are the first step in a quality improvement project. The checklists cover the following areas: screening, assessment/reassessment, staff training, care plan development, monitoring/tracking, policies and procedures, and staff education and training.

Subject: restraint reduction policy

Hi group, state is here and I need some help with a restraint reduction policy as our current one needs updating.  I have looked in the AANAC document library but cannot find anything.  Can anyone direct to one on the website (I'm probably looking in the wrong place) or does anyone have one that they can fax or email to me?  It would be much appreciated.  Thanks    email: [EMAIL PROTECTED]       fax: 715-268-6167
