This came up a one of my former facilities and created quite a lot of
controversy. I think we did not not allow the therapy to be done, because we
could't figure out how to NOT capture the days & minutes. We felt like we
would have to code the days/minutes, based on the RAI instructions. The
manual doesn't say NOT to code certain minutes, it just asks how many days &
minutes were provided. We talked about the family hiring a therapist outside
the facility on a private basis, but then rejected this ideal, as just not
ethical. It was a real hornet's nest!!!!

Subject: Family-Funded Therapy

I have a question for the group about therapy requested and paid for by the
family. If a person is in a Part A stay in the SNF and does not require
skilled therapy (other skilled services but just not rehab) but the patient
and the family want therapy and are willing to pay privately for it, is
there any reason why this could not be done? I know the days and minutes
could not be counted in section P1b (RAI manual 3-187) so that is not the
issue.
Thanks
