What state are you located in?  IF you are in PA, the Resident Data Manual is helpful in understanding CMI.  IF you are in a state that uses the RUGS 3 method of calculation, you can use the same criteria that is used for Medicare A.  It helps to read through the manual in Chapter 6.  There it spells out the criteria for each RUGS group.  You can see if you are capturing all of the diagnoses and ADL data that will help raise your CMI.  Most states base their CMI on only comprehensive MDSs so it would take a while to see a jump in your CMI with an improved process.  But quick improvements can usually be seen with an improved system of collecting ADL data and improved documentation and data collection of Restorative Nursing.
