How in the world is the first thought "stretching the point?"  They do it only at the hospital don't they.  I truly don't understand the governments thinking sometimes.  This should be a clinical decision and if it is new and healing, it should be counted.  Just my crazy opinion.   cher

There has not been specific guidance on this from CMS.  One school of thought is to count it as a surgical wound until it heals.  The other school of thought is that the first school of thought is stretching the point.  My advice to my clients is to contact the state RAI coordinator and do what that person advises.

Subject: surgical wound?

Should we check surgical wound if the resident had a new GT inserted? if YES, until when do we code this on the MDS?
Thanks for your help.
