Section I-3 is present so that we can enter diagnoses for the resident when there is no checkbox in sections I-1 or I-2 for a specific diagnosis that the resident has.  If there are boxes in I-3 leftover after you have entered the diagnoses that have no checkbox, then you can use the remaining boxes in I-3 to further clarify a diagnosis already in a checkbox.  An example of this is "cancer".  There are many different types of cancer so it would be appropriate to enter the specific ICD-9 for the particular cancer diagnosis for your resident.  (You would also check cancer in the checkbox.)  "Anemia" is another one that often is clarified in I-3.

Subject: Section I-3

I have a question about section I-3.  I never had to fill this section out before in the past.  Could someone explain it to me.  I have read the RAI manual and it is still not clear to me.

Thanks
