I did not write line about going with 8/8 below. I don't know how that got thrown in there. I would code it as a 4/2. Look at the MDS manual, pg 3-77 which states, "Even a resident who receives tube feedings and no food or fluids by mouth is engaged in eating (receiving nourishment) and is not coded as a "8." It also says, "How a resident eats or drinks, regardless of skill.Includes intake of nourishment by other means (e.g. tube feedings, total parenteral nutrition."
It does not matter what the water is being used for, to keep the tube open or to provide hydration. The point is that the resident is receiving water via the peg so it has to be coded. There are no incidental statements in the manual referring to this. Brenda W.
