Your infection control person is stating what she knows is true based on the
Association of Professionals in Infection Control standards. But you have to follow
the MDS guidelines when looking for documentation to support a UTI.
It is the same as pressure ulcers. The WOCN doesn't "down stage" ulcers, and is
encouraging use of the PUSH tool instead of the four stages of ulcers, but the MDS
still requires down staging use of the four stages.
All we can do is follow the guidelines and hope it will be resolved in a later edition
of the MDS.
