The initial assessment can be done with either the 5 or 14 day PPS assessment.  It makes more sense , in most cases, to do the initial assessment with the 5 day as you have been doing.  The initial assessment must be completed within 14 days of admission.  If you wait to do it with the 14 day PPS assessment,  you have to have both the 5 day and the 14 day done within 14 days of admission.  That is a lot of work to do in a short period of time.  Also, you are really cutting your time close if you combine it with the 14 day assessment.  You would need to set the ARD as day 11,12, or 13, collect all the data from all the disciplines, input the info into the computer, print it out and get it signed, do the RAPS and get them signed all  within just a few days.  I would only recommend doing the initial with the 14 day if I thought that the resident would be discharged before day 14 and was taking my chances that I would not need to complete an initial assessment but start the initial with the day 14 if it looks as if the resident would be staying after all.  All consultants are not created equal.
