You may use grace days for the 14 day in order to show the amount of therapy that you are providing. If you think about it from the reimbursement end, it may help. You potentially would be underpaid for the entire 14 day coverage period, just because the resident missed one day of therapy during the lookback period. Use a grace day and get the reimbursement that you are entitled to.
However, you said this was a "14 day/admission" assessment. Remember that if you decide to use grace days for the 14 day assessment, you will have to also do an admission assessment on or before day 14, to comply with the OBRA requirement. This makes a bit of extra work, but look at the money -- it is probably worth it.

Have done a 5 day MDS, working on 14 day full admission. My question is that in my facility we actually have not had this situation, the use of grace days in regard to the 14 d. Did look in the Manual, and this site. Just having a brain freeze and would like info. The resident was out of the building on the 11th day of her stay for the day, and missed her therapy's. This resident was aware she had therapy this day, but a friend took her out, by the time she got back, therapy was gone for the day. The conflicting info is I read you can choose the ARD for the 14 day through day 11-19, the when regs say, the admission must be completed by day 14. I feel uncomfortable using a date past the actual 14th day just to capture the RUG rate. I have used grace days for the 5 d on very rare occasions and for justified causes. My administrator views use of grace days as only an acception, and clearly doesnt like to use unless valid medical reasons or special events oc curing in the residents life at the time. Thank you for any help.
