If the resident was not admitted to the hospital,
you would not need to restart the PPS cycle because he was not admitted or in
an observation stay for more than 24 hours. So the next assessment due
is a day 14. Since he was not in his bed at midnight, however, the day
preceeding the midnight is not a Medicare billable day. So the MDS
schedule has to be adjusted by 1 day. Jan 23 was not a Medicare day, so
Jan 24th was actually day 11 (not day 12). See page 2-38 of the manual
under the heading of "REsident admitted to an Acute Care Facility and
returns." Read the second paragraph, it gives all the
particulars.
