Judy,
I don't know who LCCA is, but it is not a requirement to complete the initial
assessment with the 14 day PPS assessment. It is not even a recommendation. Most
facilities complete the initial assessment with the Medicare 5-day assessment. Since
the admission assessment needs to be completed within 14 days of admission, completing
the admission assessment gives you the most time. If you complete the admission
assessment with the 14 day, the only days that you can use for the ARD is days 11-14
(wouldn't use day 14 because the window should include all the way until midnight that
night). You would only have a very short time to collect information from you team,
data input the assessment, print it out and get all of the signatures done and
complete the RAPS. That would also mean that you would have already done the 5 day
assessment within that period of time. So, if you complete the admission assessment
with the 5-day , you must finish it by day 14. Then when you set the ARD for the day
14 you will have 14 days from the ARD of the 14-day assessment to get it completed.
So, you have 28 days(if you use day 14) to complete 2 assessments vs 14 days to
complete 2 assessments if you do the initial with the day 14 PPS. There is no rule
that you can't or that you need to. This is only a recommendation.
PS--if I thought the resident would be discharged before day 14, I would not do the
initial with the 5 day--the only time I don't.

Subject: HIPPS codes
I was reading on the bottom of a HIPPS code sheet that coding an initial
assessment with the 14day PPS " is not LCCA policy". So does that mean
don't do it, or try not to do it if possible?
Thanks
