I think part of our problem is that we have residents sitting up in WHEEL CHAIRS.  Get it? WHEEL CHAIRS were never meant to be used for long periods of time, they are a means of transport, not comfort chairs.  How would we like to be sitting in any chair for longer than 30 minutes?  I can't sit in a recliner for that long without changing my position or my butt gets numb.  I challenge everyone to time how long they can sit in a 'comfortable' chair in their own home, without changing position, [no cheating, do not change position for 30 minutes unless your legs become numb.

And, some of the Geri chairs I have seen are worse as they have seats that are too firm.  Forget standard of care, have some pity.  When I was a DON we had 'fluffing" times.  The RNA's would make rounds on residents in wheel chairs and just stand them up.  At that time we said we 'spanked' them.  We did a soft clapping and massage motion on their buttocks for stimulation.  Now that would be abuse and I would be in jail.

A friend who is a Risk manager at a large nursing home recently attended a seminar in which the State regulatory agency made a presentation.  In the presentation, the surveyor said that it was a "standard of care....to change the position of a sitting patient/resident every 30 minutes".  You read it right.  Sounds like a wonderful idea but I have got to say, it is a new one to me.
