Marsha,
Yes periactin is used in children, was used on my daughter who was a premi.  But we have used it here in my residents.  It is also easy to mix in with liquids.  I think it is actually better then the megace.
Good luck.

Thanks to everyone for your thoughts, My hard to please resident is 90 plus and I forgot to mention that she is alert and very oriented. Also she is quite content to smoke a pack a day along with her coffee. I expect that she burned off her taste buds long ago. We have tried Megace liquid which she refused, I even tried putting it in her coffee. She just smiled and suggested I drink it. We ordered Eldertonic this week, to soon to tell. Like the idea of carnation instant breakfast. I think periactin was the med I was looking for, isn't that the one used alot in children to simulate appetite? Crock pot idea is also interesting. maybe set it up in the smoke room she spends alot of time there.                       thanks again  Marsha

A lot of times Megace works wonders for the appetite. ..... How about using a bread maker or crock pot w/ soup in an area the resident frequents, or something else that might remind the resident of  home.

Does anyone have any ideas on what to do with a resident that just won't eat. We have tried everything from a high calorie peanut shake to a daily beer. Would like to see some weight gain.
