Slough is dead tissue. Specifically, it is necrotic tissue in the process of separating from viable portions of the body (AHCPR Clinical Practice Guideline, "Treatment of Pressure Ulcers, p. 118).  Necrotic tissue is coded as Stage 4 (RAI User's Manual, p. 3-160).
