Bobcats and snakes and wasps, oh my!
I have had to clean up poop in the hallway from a visiting miniature horse, catch escapee birds from our aviary, remove a resident's personal desk that was invested with cockroaches brought from home, and call the DNR for wild turkeys roosting on employee vehicles.  Yup.  DON=animal control!
Happy Spring!

gosh, and I have only had to catch a wasp or two.  We did have a family member bring in a tame bobcat that climed in my lap (before I heard about the part that it had been de-clawed!)  Never a dull moment...

Okay...

I was looking back over the emails with advice about being an interim DON.

I did NOT find anything mentioning chasing a snake off the premises!!!

Yesterday, I was called by a couple of hysterical staff and family members to come to the sidewalk between the admin office and our dementia unit.  There was a 2 1/2 foot snake in the middle of the sidewalk, heading toward the building. VERY alive.

Did I mention this snake was quite active?

I stood in front of it and tried to look as menacing as possible when one really wants to climb up onto the roof.  I yelled at it, and it turned around and slithered away.

We have 2 maintenance men, a full housekeeping staff.... why did they call me???????

For those of you keeping score, in my tenure as interim DON (which began 3/19) I have had a DHEC visit, a fracture of unknown origin, a missing fentanyl patch from a hospice patient, my staffing coordinator was hospitalized Thursday night with appendicitis, and I had the thrill of chasing a snake.

Gee I can't wait until next week.

Holly
