Try having a 16 year old in
your facility- due to a significant motor vehicle accident- colostomy due to
internal injuries, broken legs one in an external fixator. Unable to go home due
to the housing situation as well as dad died in the accident and mom was still
trying to get her life together.
When 20 nurses try to be MOM
and place their values on a 16 year old- as the administrator I was always
telling the nurses to "back off- you are not his mother". Some nurses would not
allow him to close the door of his room, if there were girls instead, etc.
Censoring the hours he watched TV and what he watched. I felt I needed to spank
some of the staff to get them to behave!
I had a great relationship with
the kid- Pizza for two every Thursday night- if I did not have to intervene for
the entire week.
Actually one of our residents
he actually teased/tormented went into a major depression when he left- he would
tease her and she would yell back at him, etc. When she finally talked she told
us how much she loved all the attention he gave her and she was sad that he went
home and missed his teasing her.
School was a block away so we
got him to come back and visit her. Once he started to drive again he
would bring in his baby farm animals (sheep, goats, pigs, cows, etc) to
visit the residents.
Of course I admitted this kid
the first week I was on the new job- so all the staff thought I was a complete
idiot anyway.
