I would be interested on seeing a few opinions on this. Personally I do not cut them from Medicare until the skin is closed. I take the “is a healing stage 3” approach which I feel is appropriate and I would defend if necessary. These areas even though healing are not normal tissue with normal vascularization and are subject to complications/recurrence even after totally healed. Our skin care team is involved right up to the very end etc.

If a resident has a stage III ulcer to coccyx and this is his skilled coverage, when the wound heals to a stage II, will he need to be d/c'd from Medicare?
