I have no idea, im using the same emacs and its working fine for me:

when you get the spawning error, what is the value of your inferior-
lisp-program variable?
M-x: eval-expression <return>
inferior-lisp-program
try setting it to the same value as cm-program ??? im just stabbing in
the dark here, and wont be able to help you if this doesnt work.
