a bit more on this: in the past the main reason for using the common  
lisp version was speed but bill's recent optimizations puts s7 very  
close to the common lisp speed without  the need for compilers and  
loaders and gigabytes of installations. maybe bill has the benchmarks  
somewhere. of course, if you specifically want common lisp and emacs  
then there is no substitute for it. if you want a console version of  
clm/scheme tell me what your machine is and i can post a binary.
