I use clisp 2.49 on linux and osx without problem, so I think this is probably an out-of-date file issue. Besides *.fas, clisp writes *.lib -- I don't know what these do, but the first thing I'd try is: start with a completely empty directory, untar cmn.tar, then run clisp.
