Tanya, I am no expert, but I know GVHD stands for Graft vs. Hosts Disease, which is when your body's immune system fights the donor cells. A little bit is a good thing, because it helps to eradicate the leukemia, but too much is destructive to the mucus membranes and the digestive tract, among other organs. Some end up with moderate to severe GVHD symptoms indefinitely, and I am not sure what all of the symptoms are. The closer the HLA match, the less likely this is to occur.
