Hello Dawn and
Everyone
I am also in PCRU
and feeling rather hopeful about the new drugs in the pipeline too!
However, this isn't stopping me from going ahead with part II of my stem cell
harvest. Part I happened last March and you can read all about it here:
My feeling is that
the longer we stay on IM the harder it might be for some of us to mobilize our
stem cells, so the sooner you decide, the better.
When I start the
part II of the harvest I will hopefully be using a new drug - AMD3100 from a
company called AnorMed. This was recommended to me by my Sloan Kettering
doctor Dr. S. Nimer. It is still in clinical trials but it is showing very
good results for patients who had a difficult time mobilizing their
cells.
Having harvested
cells on ice spells "security" for me. Additionally, the idea of
harvesting cells and storing them is quite interesting in that while having an
auto SCT certainly isn't a cure, what defines cure? What if for some
strange reason you do not qualify for the new drugs or they don't work on
you. I think we are learning that there are still some important unknowns
about this disease. My thought is while we still do not have all the
answers, why not take the precautionary route and save them just in
case?
If your insurance
covers it, and your healthy enough why not go for it? Better than
ever having to hear yourself say "woulda, coulda, shoulda"
Let us know what you
decide,
Cheers,
Cheryl-Anne
