I applied for ss disability the last day of my sick leave. I got approval in less than 30 days. CML is consider a terminal illness that last more than 12 months. I was also given disability from my federal job as OPM consider CML as a terminal illness. OPM approved my disabilty in one day. The letter that my doctor wrote, I thought was a joke. It was 4 lines long. Said I was 53 old lady with CML being treated with 400 mg of gleevec. She can't work right now and is seeking to retire. I couldn't believe how easy it was. I've already recived my 2nd check from opm and start getting ss disability in december. Money wise for me it work out ok. I was able to get my pension and ssi. $3000 reduction of taxes on my home. I am able to have my IRA's and 401K without penalty because with disability  you can have your money before 59 1/2. I was planning on retiring at 55 but this isn't my idea of retirement.
