I am interested in what Jennifer has to say about healthcare as she works
for one of the best healthcare facilities in the Nation. My brother works
for Hospital Corporation of America. When his HCA insurance failed to get
proper care within the system because the health insurance would not care
for a procedure which HCA Associated Doctors felt they needed, it taught me that
there is a real disconnect between Health Insurance Plans and the Doctors.
Health Care Plans are used to manage costs, not give good healthcare in my
opinion.
The overuse by healthy people wanting to stay healthy has put a crimp in
the care of those who really do need care. Right now, the
costs of healthcare are being raised because of some tort issues, overuse
by healthy people and who knows what else. As in life, there
are more gray areas than black and white. My point in all of this is that
if our own institutions which give us such good care such as Mayo's and HCA
can't even provide an insurance program that will benefit their employees,
how do we expect other institutions not involved in healthcare to do
so?
She notes:
For instance, I work full time, and usually about 50 hours a week, at
a
demanding, stressful, deadline-driven job. I also have a side job (in part to help make ends meet because of my medical expenses). I'll tell you, it's extremely difficult for me to work full time and stay on a full dosage of Gleevec. I sometimes don't have the luxury of worrying about what that means for the future -- I have to worry about paying bills today - including medical bills for my bone marrow biopsies, blood work and Gleevec. That's the reality of life. I'm not having PCRs done anymore because I can't afford them, as I have to pay 100 percent out of pocket for them since the Mayo Clinic doesn't do PCR testing for CML For those who don't know me, I am a caregiver to my wife Jimmie who is
coming up on 4 years DX on Feb 28. She has had 4 Doctors who had various
degrees of knowledge on the subject of CML, two of which were great and two who
were a disgrace. Her current Doctor keeps up with the latest research to
our pleasure. She experiences fatigue and some other side effects which
cause her to be unable to work. However, she is traveling with me and we
are enjoying life ( at least until she hits that fatigue wall) on
occasion.
