Dear lady bug
I imagine most of us know were you are coming from. Depression is one of
the side effects of Gleevec and CML. In addition to the depression, which I
know I have had to deal with, you have the stress of college and the desire
to fit in with the other students that don't have to deal with a chronic
disease and a medication with some wicked side effects.
You have my admiration for "sticking-it-out".
My daughter is 27, finishing her coursework for her PHD and goes through
periods of depression as brought on by the deadlines for papers, stress of
living alone, and a less than ideal social life and she doesn't have CML.
I suspect other people in this group will tell you, your oncologist should
also be responding to your mental as well as your physical condition.
There is nothing wrong with seeking professional help for the emotions
surrounding this disease.
Now for the good side of our disease... Gleevec is great and it is probable
the reason I am still around to respond to your note. There are other drugs
in trial that are showing great results without the side effects you are
experiencing. The BMS and AMN drugs are still in phase one trial, but
should be in phase two during your next semester. Hopfully you will be able
to find a treatment center near you which will enable you to participate.
BMT is a big step and some of this group will swear by the treatment and
others will elect not to consider it. At my age, I have elected to stay
with the drugs (I am in a phase one BMS354825 trial) and not pursue this
avenue of treatment. That path is something you will have to research and
decide for your self.
My apologies to the group for the length of this note. My suggestion (as
the dad of another young women); go for the second opinon, accept the fact
other drugs will eliminate the side effects, and study hard as, as far as
CML is concerned, you should have a great many years to use the education
you are obtaining.
Bob
