Double dose of new cancer drug not required

Reported by Susan Aldridge, PhD, medical journalist

A new study underlines the efficiency of imatinib in a rare form of stomach cancer.
Imatinib mesylate (Gleevec) is a very effective new anti-cancer drug that first proved its worth in the treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia. Now it's been shown to work on gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST), a type of soft tissue tumor previously treatable only by surgery (after which it usually recurs).

Further study into the effect of Gleevec and GIST involving 746 patients in 57 institutions showed that doubling the dose is not necessary. The response rate was about 50 per cent whether the patient received 400 milligrams or 800 milligrams a day of the drug. Response here means that the tumor either shrank or stayed the same. Ongoing research is checking whether the double dose might be helpful to patients whose tumor continues to grow with a standard dose of Gleevec.
