Hi Everyone,

I am finding that it is common that a complete blood count is not performed routinely.   Since November, 2003, I had several blood tests for different things (shoulder and neck injury, uric acid, cholesterol, hiv – insurance purposes) none of the blood tests prior to my CBC in September, 2004 showed that I had a high wbc (425K)  and platelet (500K) count.   In checking with my previous primary care physician, he didn’t check the box for a CBC since I appeared to be healthy.   In checking with the insurance company lab, they only check to see if your red blood count is within the normal range (which it was at the time) and they are more concerned that someone has HIV.  I was rejected for my life insurance increase because of elevated liver enzymes and not CML.

I also spoke with my current primary care physician about not having a CBC done when I had my physical in May, 2004.  He stated that he didn’t warrant a CBC because I appeared so healthy, active, etc.   Boy, that was misleading because I was already showing problems with an enlarged spleen.  I thought I had pulled a muscle so I didn’t bother telling the doctor about it.  I have checked with several other individuals about a complete blood count (all using different insurance carriers and health care providers) and they find that a CBC is not routinely performed (at least in the S.F. Bay Area).

Don’t get me wrong my doctors have been great.  My feeling is sometimes doctors appear to get into a rut of “if you don’t tell them something is wrong they won’t go looking for it”.

Sorry to get on my soapbox.   I now make sure whenever my friends, family and staff go for a physical, I tell them to make sure that they request a CBC be performed with their blood tests.

Thanks,

Peter

I gave blood, too -- I called the Red Cross after dx to see if they
had records of any CBC testing they might have done to see if
anything looked funny in the three donations I made in the six
months vefore dx.  Imagine my surprise when they told me they don't
check for WBC count!  They only check to make sure you're not
anemic, and of course, HIV, etc.  I found this very disconcerting to
folks who might have been given my donation.
