My boyfriend (Marcus) just came back from his doctor's appointment with the results of his bmt after 3 months of 400mg of Gleevec, his wbc is at 5,000 from 128,000 when first diagnosed in September of 2004, his doctor said his bone marrow tests show 44% cml from 86%, what does this mean exactly, is this good, fair, we both don't understand and the doctor didn't explain it to him, can someone tell me, Marcus is very upset, he's angrier by the day and is so depressed he can barely get out of bed, I don't know what to do. Hi, It seems to me that Marcus is responding very well to Gleevic, for this you should both be very happy. When you have questions about this disease or symptoms of the medication write them down. Then ask the doctor when you go see him or her. Some times it seems like they don't think that is what they are supposed to do but that's their job, answering our questions. That is the easiest way for them to help eliminate many of our fears and concerns. Always remember that you're the client and he is there to help and assist you in every way, both physically and mentally. If it seems that's not what that doctor is willing to do then it may be best to find on who is!
As for the depression. When I was diagnosed I as well as my wife were in shock, I looked for a support group and it really helped. I went to meetings and the only people there were those who were cml patients. Most of them were on the same drugs that I was and were having the same side effects. What I'm saying is they understand like we do on this site exactly what you and Marcus are going through.
The one thing that is never to be allowed into Marcus head is the thought of giving up. Never let it get you down stay up beat and positive! I was dxed in 97 and in 99 things looked very bleak, but I wouldn't give up. Gleevic came along in 2001 and in 2002 I was in total remission. Since then they have made other strides toward a cure of this demon.
My prayers and very best to you both in this fight,
Jim Rodeghier
