Hi Lynn and Nancy, Thanks for the feedback. It's looking as though there's not a tight link between cold intolerance and weight gain, thus blowing a possible thyroid link once again. Nuts. It would be nice to be able to solve both problems with one little pill, even if in only a minority of us. How fabulous that you remain PCRU, Lynn!
Nancy, you're right that "cold intolerant" probably isn't the best term for what you're experiencing; it's just the medical jargon I'm used to. What would be a better term, do you think? The basic thyroid tests are listed on the following link (among many others): http://www.muhealth.org/~daveg/thyroid/thy_test.html. The ones they usually start out with - or used to when I was still in practice - were T3, total and free T4, and TSH. I don't know whether or not that's changed. >From time to time I've heard it claimed by some of the alternative medicine types that these basic tests fail to miss certain subtle types of hypothyroidism, but I haven't stayed current on that debate.
