This is Sandra's story in her own words:- I am single, born in 1947. I trained as a nurse for people with a mental handicap at a hospital just outside Bedford. Apart from time out to gain experience with young children at a Prep. School, Farleigh Wallop, Hants., and 3 yrs. reading Sociology/Human Geography for Joint Hons. BA. I worked as a nurse or senior nurse teacher. I moved back to live in Cambridge in 1976, and in 1980, I lost most of my hearing in both ears (Otosclerosis) and had a failed operation on R ear. In 1987 I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis. Due to the drugs I had to take for RA, I had to have regular blood tests. It was the result of one of these blood tests that caused my GP concern, and a second test was conducted and CML diagnosed at Addenbrooke's Hospital In January 1994. I took Hydroxyurea, Initially and marrow was harvested In March 1994 in preparation for a BMT. I was tried on Interferon, In September '94 but was allergic to It. The autologous BMT was performed in nov.-Dec.l994 (the first outside London) Did not have the expected Temperature and Infection but did have a very nasty skin Infection. Was readmitted on Dec. 30th with suspected Pulmonary embolism following removal of the central line. In January 1995, It was suggested that I took Interferon again, in conjunction with ant-histamines. I followed this regime for 6 months, not only severe side-effects of Interferon but also those associated with Piriton were evident. Hence, I decided to take early retirement as I also looked after my Mother who was a frail late 80 yr. old I stayed 100% PH- post transplant for 2 yrs. Since then, the counts fluctuate and I am on a combination of Hydroxyurea and Anagrelide. The dosage varies virtually from month to month. I also take Meptazinol a painkiller for RA and have Prednisolone IMI at Intervals. I am slowly regaining my memory after the period on Interferon. At last I can remember not only who Karl Marx, Carl Jung and Carl Rogers are/were, but also some of what they wrote." (my specialist subjects Included Sociology, Counseling and Group Work as a teacher) I will let you know if I hear from her family.
