Hi Mike,

I'm so glad that you did so well. It sounds like you had everything
going for you at the time and that helped play a role in your
sucess.

Hypothetically speaking though, if you were a young woman with young
kids to raise and no one to help you and no money to pay anyone to
help, do you think you would have done so well? Could you have
driven young children to school every day, helped with homework,
cleaned up after they got sick with the stomach flu, scrubed
bathrooms and toilets, shovelled your driveway, mowed your lawn,
cooked nutritious meals for your family etc..?

I guess what I'm saying is that not everyone can entertain the
thought of a BMT for a variety of reasons. Some have no match, some
have other health concerns that preclude it, and some just don't
have the outside support to consider it.

I don't mean to sound negative and I am truly happy that you've done
so well but for some it really isn't an option. For those who do
have it as an option, there is alot to consider, such as how it will
effect the lives of the people they are responsible for.
Undoubtably it will be the most important decision anyone ever makes
in their life.

I also agree that everyone should feel confident in their doctor but
unfortunatly not all doctors are so fantastic. Some can cure you
and some can actually kill you from their incompetance. You have to
trust in yourself and your gut instict. If you feel like something
just isn't right, don't hesitate to ask questions and/or find
another doctor if need be....your life could infact depend on it.

There's no question that we all want to be cured but I find the
word "cured" is a bit obscure. Some people thought they were cured
when they had their BMT but infact relapsed later and others who
have done well on Gleevec consider themselves to have a functional
cure.

I really think that the BMT decision is a very difficult one to make
and not one that anyone should just jump into without doing their
research. There's just too much at stake. Of course I realize that
for some people there are no alternatives but for those people, it's
not such a big decision after all because it's the ONLY decision.

Take care,
Tracey
