I've had cosiderable hair thinning in the front of my hairline. I
take it for granted that this is a delayed or cumulative Gleevec side
effect because in my family, none of the women suffered obvious hair
loss after the age of 65, and so I would have no genetic
predisposition to it. My thyroid levels are within normal range, so
that does not seem to be part of the problem. It would be interesting
to know exactly what is operating here, to cause this problem so long
after starting Gleevec.

Hi ViVi,

We are in a similar situation....I have also been on IM for 5 years,
3.5 years at 800mg. In the past I have had limited episodes of thinner
hair (documented by the same hairdresser for many years)......then
about 5 or 6 months ago, my hair seemed really thin and lifeless. It
was not falling out any faster but was getting thinner....so maybe new
hair was not growing in. I noticed it in the temples, and some on the
top. It was not growing fast either.....I have shorter hair and did
not have a haircut for about 14 weeks!

I work with a naturopath and she said that "if" the drug is
interferring with trace mineral absorption then it will first show up
in the hair, nails and skin. This could be a cumulative effect over
time. So, I am drinking nettle tea each day....a good source of trace
minerals. I did find a commercial product that I like....Burt's Bees
Avocado Butter....you apply when your hair is wet in the shower.
Mostly it gave it more texture. There are many good herbal books that
will tell you the benefits of some of these products....like The Green
Pharmacy by James Duke, PhD......but then you need to decide if this
is an option you want to try. Drinking an herbal tea is not as
excessive supplementation. Right now, I do have a lot of new little
hairs growing in....so I don't know if this was just a cycling that
some of us see with our side effects, or if some of the things I am
doing is making a difference......but I feel that my 'bad hair days'
are turning around. Hope the same happens for you.
