I too have slightly elevated creatinine levels. My oncologist did
not seem concerned but I was so I went to my regular doctor who
consulted with his partner, who happened to be a specialist in
nephrology- kidneys that is - and then referred me to him. The
kidney specialist ordered blood work, ultrasound, and a 24-urine
sample.
I have creatinine levels of between 1.2 and 1.4, which are borderline
and have had these levels - at least - since diagnosis in June 2004.

I am taking Gleevec but it is not the cause of the elevated
creatinine as I have blood work that shows that I had creatinine
levels on the high end of normal before I started on Gleevec.

I received the test results earlier this week and met with the
doctor. All the tests came out fine. The specialist told me not to
worry and said that people who are very muscular or work out a lot
tend to have higher creatinine levels. Creatinine is a byproduct of
muscle breakdown. The better test is not the serum (blood)
creatinine level but the 24hr urine creatinine clearance, which
measures how much creatinine your kidney processes.
For most people, a high level of creatinine in the blood means that
the kidneys are impaired and therefore not clearing out the
creatinine and thus a higher level backs up in the blood. Those who
work out intensely have higher levels of creatinine in the blood than
a normal person.

Maybe there is a connection between higher levels of creatinine
production and leukemia but that is only my theory at this point.

PS: Regarding the repeated posts issue....I am not criticizing Rob
but I wanted to weigh in here on repeated posting with bad links,
limited text, etc. I really would appreciate less "posting" and more
primary information. I am only guessing but I think that it is not a
small minority that feel this way but a silent majority. I don't
need more information about small Gleevec studies or press releases
by start-up drug companies. There are already many published studies
regarding Gleevec, Gleevec and relapse curves, Gleevec and optimal
dosage, etc. in major respected journals and magazines that we don't
have to go grabbing at every little tid bit of information as if we
were starving. At this point I think we have the luxury of being
selective in what we post - a good thing!

readings, too. So it's probably not the Gleevec. His has been as
high as 1.8, but is usually around 1.5 or 1.6. He recently had a
stone removed from the bile duct, but his creatinine still stayed
high, although the Alkaline Phosphatase went down considerably. Just
to let you know you are not the only one with a
creatinine "problem". Hang in there!
