i found out about the leukemia, and yes my spleen was swollen i think
he said it was 12 inches and the norm is 7.my WBC was 98000 not too
bad compared to some ive seen . My only concern right now is that my
counts are rising. The back and neck pain came back after taking the
gleevec for 2 months and now its disteneded down my back , the motrin
doesnt help. I do need to find a good Dr. in my area. My doc is short
on answers and insensitive to my constant questioning. I think hes
burnt out. He was my grandmas Doc , he was very good with her but has
no bedside manner as far as im concerned.

Hi Char,
Well, your spleen was swollen before you were diagnosed, so maybe it
was still the cause of the back pain?

My wbc was also about 93,000 when I first started treatment (in the
days before Gleevec). I do know some people who are having some back
pain and the specialist (Dr. Talpaz in this case) attributes it to
Gleevec. You can try a muscle relaxant.....sometimes taking extra
calcium/magnesium helps.......or quinine from tonic water or pills.

If you have been ill at all, like the flu, that might account for your
rising counts???

And lastly, but probably most importantly, with the rapid changes in
the treatment of CML and the treatment options....you need a doctor
who will answer your questions and is up to date with the new
information. Many of us have moved on from the first oncologist we
had, to find a better one. If you post where you live, maybe someone
can suggest a good doctor or a good facility to be seen. If you end up
not responding real well to Gleevec, this is definitely when you want
to see a cml specialist. Also, I think that www.cmlsupport.com might
have a list of recommended oncologists.

You want to be pro-active and demand a lot of your doctor....this is
your fight to fight.
