With one shoe on and one shoe off, Dana Shedd sits before a sewing machine in her Shamrock Springs classroom, a bright yellow "LiveStrong" bracelet dangling from her wrist.
The stocking-foot approach gives Dana, 8, and friends Meredith Roush, 8, and Abigail Adams, 7, better control of the machine's pedal -- although the three are plenty reliant on help from teacher Stephanie Hixson, too. Hixson repeatedly urges the girls, who take turns at the machine, to slow down as they finish sewing the corners on the 12 kid-sized blankets piled off to one side.
