My son has never has insurance since he was diagnosed. He was on his way to
med school when diagnosed. Because he has left the state his HMO was in and
moved to a new location the HMO wouldn't cover him.

He contacted Novartis Patient Assistance Program and they approved him and
furnised his gleevec because he had no employment. He did qualify for Kentucky
Medicaid and so they paid for the meds until he was in remission. At that point
they said he was well enough to work and they dropped him from that program.
He once again contacted Novartis and they put him back on their program.

In short, he has never gone without his medication, even though he has never
been in a position to pay for it and has to insurance coverage. He recently
signed on to a Kentucy insurance program and will be paying premiums and they
won't cover the leukemia for a year. At that time, they will begin covering
his gleevec.

His Kentucky premiums are not really very high. Anyway, each state has some
form of insurance for those who cannot get any other type of coveraqe. In the
mean time, contact Novartis. His qualifications were that he had no other
insurance or means to have any. He is considered low income, because of his
student status and he has a family.

I hope this helps. Novartis has been totally wonderful. I have spoken to the
head of the Patient Assistance Program and they were very concerned that no one
ever to without their gleevec.

Good luck.

Penny M.
