To Penny (and others re cord blood):   Using privately banked cord blood for families with blood cancers is a complicated matter and is not as promising as you may have been led to believe. Publicly banking cord blood may be another option, allowing any patient the opportunity to find an unrelated cord blood match from the public inventory. If some anonymous mother had not publicly donated her baby girl's cord blood in 1997, I would have not found a match, there would have been no transplant for me, a CMLer in blast crisis--and we all know what that means. Cord blood is giving new hope to more patients, especially adults, who are unable to find a marrow match.
