---------- Forwarded message ---------- Genetic alterations related to a group of leukemias Jos Luis Vizmanos, a lecturer at the University of Navarra, is to investigate BCR-ABL-negative chronic myeloproliferative syndromes in a project to last for three years.
According to the scientist, these syndromes make up a heterogeneous group of leukemias that are difficult to diagnose and to treat given that they show similar clinical characteristics and have unknown causes. Nevertheless, it is said that, amongst some patients, gene alteration has been observed that results in proteins which have an activity known as tyrosine kinase. Besides its considerable diagnostic importance, the presence of these lesions present a rational basis for the development and application of new therapies aimed specifically at this kind of alteration and which have fewer side effects than conventional treatments. Jos Luis Vizmanos underlined that this study is looking for new lesions in genes with tyrosine kinase activity, with the aim of throwing light on the involvement of this anomalous activity in these illnesses.
