Hi Libby, Gale, Michael and list,

Thank you for the warm welcome:)) My diagnosis comes thanks to a few
gallstones that were giving me problems. My GP sent me to have an
ultrasound scan for those, the sonographer noticed an enlarged spleen
(22 cms) and sent the results in for blood testing, possible infection.
I took the blood tests on a Friday afternoon, Sunday night around 11
p.m. I received a call from a hospital doctor telling me I needed to
come into the emergency room ASAP. I asked him why, as I was not
feeling ill at all and he told me abnormal white cell count and they
needed to run tests to see what it could be. Went in hospital Monday
a.m. they did more blood tests, a bone marrow aspiration (I was a dry
tap and ow!! does that test hurt). They arranged for me to go to St.
Barts hospital Tuesday a.m. to have Leukopheresis. I took the train
home in the afternoon. I have had no symptoms of the illness at all,
none, except for a bit of discomfort from the spleen. My white cell
count has dropped in one week from 300 to 70, which I think is good.
The doctor is starting me on Gleevec next week. I have a very
optimistic attitude about the treatment and my doctors have been very
positive and supportive. They asked me to participate in a cancer
research project yesterday. Has anyone else done this? I suppose they
are trying to find out the cause of this illness. My doctor seems to
think there may be a hereditary factor involved since my cousin was
diagnosed with it 7 years ago, had a bone marrow transplant and is fine
now. I'm certainly glad this group is here so we can share information
and experiences with the illness and treatments available.
