Hi Michael, I am not exactly sure where Columbus, Ga is located, but I think it is about 3 1/2 to 4 hours from Mobile. I know that Montgomery, AL is a 3 hour drive from here, and Birmingham (UAB) is 5 hours from Mobile. Likewise, Atlanta is a 5 hour drive from Mobile.
I think you mentioned previously that you were considering treatment at UAB. You are probably fairly close to B'ham, aren't you? I opted to get treatment at MD Anderson in Houston, even though it is an 8-9 hour drive from Mobile, because we have family and friends that live in Houston, and also because MDACC is definitely on the cutting edge of cancer research. Of course, like everyone else that travels to MDACC, my routine care (blood tests, etc) is managed by my local oncologist. They fax the reports to MDACC, and as long as everything is fine, I have no contact with MDACC until it is time for my 3 month BMA. However, I recently have had some things that I needed to discuss with Dr. Cortes and/or his staff, and while they do return calls (eventually), they are not the easiest people to get in touch with. That's one of the draw backs of such a big hospital. However, I have run into the big egos here, too. My surgeon's office refused to contact MDACC. They told me to have Dr. Cortes contact them, instead. I am thinking of ditching that doctor's office (the surgeon's wife is his office manager).
