For Cheryl Staples, walking the first lap at the "Relay for Life," on
Friday is an honor she never hoped for.
The kickoff lap of the 18-hour American Cancer Society event is reserved for anyone who has ever been diagnosed with cancer. Staples earned that honor in March of 2003, when she learned she had chronic myelogenous leukemia following a routine physical. The disease is in remission because of a drug called Gleevec, which was made possible partly by research funded by the American Cancer Society, she says. New!
