Hi Brenda and Marcia,
Initially when I started on Gleevec I had severe cramps. I will never forget
one that I had early a few months in. The spasm was so intense that my leg
literally turned almost all the way around. I woke up everyone in the
house... My son and my mother were trying to hold me up and pull my leg back
to where it should have been. A painful but somewhat fond memory.
Unfortunately I lost my son in 2002 almost a year after the incident. So I
remember him rushing to help me:) rubbing my calf for about 30 minutes
after.
I have also had them in my forearms. They too caused my arm to do a crazy
twist and lock. Very painful and very draining.
I have had them under my chin in my neck when I yawn, in the back of my head
when I turn suddenly, in my feet while driving, and in my hands whne
carrying something. Most recently I have been getting them under my rib
cages. All of them seem to be brought on while doing some sort of stretch.
I have recently added stretching to my daily exercise routine. I am sure is
helping a lot. For the past year I have been doing much better.
I increased my water intake and about 4 months ago I started taking
supplements. Calcium, Magnesium and Potassium.
Those who are taking any type of water pill for edema should definitely
consider adding the above supplements.
Hopefully my information is helpful... oh and I am 40 years old and I doubt
it has anything to do with age.

Peace....

Marcia,
Ouch, you've really had a time of it. I have been on Gleevec for
little over a year and have had no where near the level of cramps you
have had. Do you drink lots of water through the day? It is suppose
to reduce the toxicity of the medicine. The cramping areas have
stayed the same for me too. I wonder if age has anything to do with
the level of severity, it seems the 'more mature' folks experience
more severe side effects, I'm 43. What is everyone elses take on
this?
