---------- Forwarded message ---------- Research: Aging Stem Cells
Elderly people tend to suffer more infections and have a greater chance of developing myeloid leukemia than young people. Basic research on mice has suggested that the cause may be the aging of blood-producing stem cells. As reported in the July 9 issue of Science News, a study team led by Derrick Rossi, PhD, Department of Pathology at Stanford University first killed off the blood-making stem cells in young and old mice with radiation. Stem cells from young donor mice were then transplanted into the older irradiated group. The young mice received stem cells from elderly donors. After several weeks the older mice who received transplants were producing different types of blood cells that reflected the young, donor mice profile. The younger mice with older stem cell transplants had significantly fewer lymphoid blood cells (which help cells battle infection) and more genes responsible for producing myeloid cells, many of which are associated with the development of myeloid leukemia. Rossi's team concluded in an article in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences that this shift from lymphoid-cell production to myeloid-cell production brought on by the aging of stem cells could be responsible for the increases in both infections and in the increased risk of leukemia. . ------------------------ Yahoo!
