Dear All---July 9th was the 6th annual BMT Cruise on the
Hudson with buffet
lunch & dj. Sponsors: my Dr. Michael Schuster, NY
Presby. Hospital & Amgen.
This year we were on a bigger boat! Patients
were given thermoses--stainless
steel, very nice--stamped with 'NY Pres.
Hospital/BMT Program.' Good food,
fun music, drs. & nurses &
patients & their guests all dancing & celebrating
everyone's good
health.
I attended with my new friend Priscilla. She's doing great on
the BMS trial
at MD Anderson. We met up with my friend Eleanor, a friend I
made 5 yrs. ago
on the 1st cruise we both attended. Past illness is the
common denominator.
When you meet new people you exchange names & then
ask what their connection
is to the cruise. So everyone swaps stories
& then just visits like normal
folks---which is what we've
become.
As he did last year, Dr. Schuster introduced 3 people who had
successful
transplants----each a remarkable story. A young woman
befriended another bmt
patient & supported him by being an example of
coming through the tough
times. Both spoke of their experiences &
shared their gratitude for each
other, the drs., nurses & other
support staff.
Most remarkable was the story of the young man(with AML)
who is a triplet.
He has an identical twin---and a fraternal twin!! The
identical twin was of
course a match---and so was the fraternal twin!!! It
is thrilling to hear
the stories & see the smiles.
Expected
Victoria & Cathy & Jeff Kramer to be on board. So it was a bit
disappointing that they couldn't make it. Hope they'll be there next year.
It's always a joy to make more room at the table.
Know that life
can be good again. It may not be easy & it may take time. But
for most
of us, it will happen.
