Hi Alicia,
I don't think most of us take the Hydroxyurea after our counts go down at least my Dr hasn't had me doing it. I didWhat is Gleevec?
Gleevec, also known as STI571, is a new drug that the Food and Drug Administration approved today for the treatment of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML), a cancer of white blood cells. It was designed in the laboratory to target an abnormal version of a normal cellular protein, present in nearly all CML patients. The abnormal protein is much more active than the normal version and is probably the cause of the disease. By blocking the abnormal protein, called BCR-ABL, Gleevec kills the leukemia cells. take it in the beginning. I remember when I was in the hospital after being first dx the nurse brought me all these huge pills; as I have never been a pill taker, i ask her what they were and what they were doing to me and the side effects; it's funny thinking about it now. She went off to find a meds book and came back and was reading it to me; I took the pills and was still wondering what they were. MY Dr finally came in and explained them to me. It seems I've heard some on the list taking Hydroxyurea because they couldn't take IM. I also had to take both the Hydrx and Gleevec together because my counts were so high in the beginning; then they dropped so low that I had to stop everything until they went back up. So, if your counts were not coming down as quick as the dr thought that might be why you are on both. The article below says it kill the lukies by golly. Remember the song. Gleevec Gleevec you're a pill you're a pill.
eat you in the morning eat you in the morning
KILL KILL KILL
KILL KILL KILL
Someone wrote that song; can't remember it now.
