Hey Pat, Livia and Group:
My husband of 25 years abandoned the children and I after my hip replacement failed. This was an older man that I had 'vowed' to remain with should his health fail him. To add insult to injury, we attended our daughter's graduation as a family, came home and told me that he was moving out. . . in which he did in three days. I didn't know that he had been having an affair with a woman who lived within a 2 block radius of our home for over 3 years. This man also waited until the day after I went into the hospital to file for a divorce. Being incapacitated to 'fight' . . . to date, I haven't recovered all the money he owes me per court order. The divorce took over 4 years, and I was diagnosed with our bug; I think everyone including my Attorney thought that I would die.
Looking back on everything that happened, in hindsight. . . his abandonment was the best thing that he could have done for my children and me. It has made the 3 of us much stronger, my daughter won't have any contact with him; and my son spent less than 15 minutes at his apartment when he was home 3 1/2 weeks for Mother's Day. I never told them of the wrong that their Dad did over the years; but my daughter remembers everything, and what my son didn't, she told him. This man is almost 80 now, and he will be a lonely 'ole fart' as I call him. He was not able to 'marry' the woman who had pre-planned the celebration because I hadn't been able to sign the divorce papers. After he found out about my CML, he called and had the nerve to think I would take him back after causing us to lose our home, car, and financial stability; due to my disability.
Any man or woman who leaves their spouse or significant other due to illness, I truly believe will 'reap what they sow'. You cannot do wrong and get by. . . anyone who has experienced this as I have. . . know that the person who 'abandons' you isn't worth being with in the first place . . . I have Honey now. You, too, will have someone in your life who will truly appreciate you, because each one of us is a very special person.
Take care, and as always, brother & sister survivors. . . you are in my prayers.
