Rosalie Gregory, who is facing steeper costs for medicine under the new Medicare drug program, is getting help from the manufacturer of an expensive leukemia medication that has kept her alive, her family said.

The Ceres woman, the subject of a Bee story Dec. 21, received word this week that she qualified for financial assistance through Novartis Oncology, the maker of Gleevec. The drug has been successful in controlling chronic myelogenous leukemia and a form of gastric cancer.

Gregory, 69, was faced with paying more than $3,600 for the drug this year after her Medicare managed-care plan was merged with the Medicare Part D program.
