I'm beginning to think that congestive heart failure may not be as rare
a side-effect as has been reported. In my case, it was a concurrence
of events that led to it this summer. Like many Gleevec-takers, I have
constant oedema but until this summer it did not slow me down in any
manner and I ignored it since it was comparatively minor. Then, in
August, New York City had a heat wave accompanied by very high
humidity. That did it. In mid-August, when the heat wave was at its
worst, I developed congestive heart failure as my body could not cope
with the double whammy of the "usual" oedema and the additional oedema
caused by the heat wave. So I suppose another rule for us should be:
"When it's very hot or humid, be extra aware of how your body is
reacting."
