Hi Deb,

Sorry to hear that both Gleevec and the new medication are not working
as needed. I was diagnosed 9 years ago at age 58, but thankfully
Gleevec is still working. Before Gleevec was available, we started the
process for a bone marrow transplant. The National Bone Marrow
Registry keeps track of the various potential donors on their lists.
The hospital where the bone marrow transplant may be preformed can
request one free worldwide search of all donor bases, unless the
procedure has changed since 2000. Your Hematologist or Oncologist
should be able to advise you on this. Also find out how many BM
Transplants are preformed at your potential hospital as the more
experienced the better, and the numbers vary dramatically across the
nation.

In reference to applying for Social Security Disability, submit the
documentation with the strongest recommendation and statements from
your doctors as possible as I understand about 90% of requests are
turned down on the first submission. I was turned down the first time
but won on the second round. When your's is probably turned down, file
for a second review, and even a 3rd if necessary. The process moves
very slowly, and make sure you fill out ever form they give you
completely. Keep records of everything. It is frustrating, but
eventually you should be able to get the support.

Do contact the local leukemia society, or go to their national web site
at www.lls.org or leukemiasociety.org as they can provide you with both
information and support. A great site to secure a lot of information
is www.cancer.gov.

Good luck to both of you, and as caregiver you need to get some rest
occasionally as you don't need to "burn out" and not be available for a
long battle.

Ken
