Donna: I live outside of Cuba. Closer for me to go to St. Louis than to Springfield.......I started with a doctor in Washington, Mo., & liked him, but did not like the labs there, they messed up two different tests that I had to have redone & it was nearly three to four weeks in getting the initial genetics test results back on the Philly so he would know whether to put me on Gleevec or not. My husband was not very happy with them and managed to get me in at Siteman Cancer Center at Washington School of Medicine in St. Louis. His office manager is a leukemia survivor from 1995 (one of the acute, very aggressive) and he managed to get me in to see her doctor.....I just loved him. But, he left after about six or eight months to go to Atlanta, Ga. to set up a Hematology center for Emory University Hospital like the one at Siteman. I am now on my fourth doctor (they kept passing me around, one said I wasn't sick enough for him, the next one went back in to research, thus bringing me to Dr. Cashen.) The last couple of times that I've gone, just been seeing the nurse practitioner......I told my brother that pretty soon, I guess I'll be downgraded to just "phoning it in" (smile). I guess it is a good thing, though, huh, not being sick enough? I like Dr. Cashen......she isn't BMB happy like some of the doctors were......said she keeps an eye on the counts and genetics tests, if anything crops up that suggests something abnormal, she'll then schedule a BMB. Well, I'm not going to argue with that.......(smile). Another plus for going up there.......their treatment center is excellent in doing biopsies and transplants as well as other cancer related treatments. They are very caring & very professional. The first doctor I had did his biopsy in his office exam room on the table with only some local (and gave me Lorazapam & Percocet to take beforehand. Needless to say, I felt every thing he did & said I would never do it like that again. He said that he couldn't give me anything because it would change the outcome of the results. Hmmmmmmmmm.........where I go now, they don't seem to have a problem giving you something. Plus, the girls in the blood lab are the best at drawing blood.....the last two times I've been, didn't even feel the stick of the needle. Last October, my mom was with me (an "old-schooled" nurse, retired now) & she said "I'm impressed" at how well the girl had done.
